The Horror Movie

June 6, 2026

This was written as a fun exercise during a seminar. We were asked to create a short poem within five minutes. I wrote the first two stanza’s in the class but I loved the premise so much I decided to expand upon it.

I hope you enjoy it.

The Horror Movie

Oh, the horror, Oh, how she screams.
The glint of the knife’s steel,
Reflected off the studio lights.
Don’t worry it’s not real

The masked killer reveals his face,
He puts away the knife.
‘Don’t be frightened my dear.’ He says,
And hugs his on-screen wife.

The fear has gone, she’s all safe now,
She’s relaxed, she feels groovy.
There is no need to fear the dark,
It’s only, a movie.

She walks off to her trailer,
She needs a hot shower.
But in the dark he stands there, still,
He feels the surge of power.

She turns, she screams, he leaps at her,
She cannot see his guise.
The director has brought her lines,
‘Don’t worry, It’s me!’ He cries.

The fear has gone, it’s all safe now,
She’s relaxed, she feels groovy.
There is no need to fear the dark,
It’s only, a movie.

She leaves the set and drives away,
She didn’t check the rear.
He’s lurking there, in the shadow,
He’s racking up the fear.

She glances back and sees him there,
He raises up his knife.
He plunges into her flesh,
Extinguishes her life.

The fear has gone, she’s all safe now,
She relaxed, she felt groovy.
There’s no need to fear the dark,
It’s a ‘horror’ movie.
